Inspirational Quotes

exploreNot all of these ‘inspirational quotes’ are obviously inspirational, but they are at the very least thought provoking, and perhaps inspiring in an off-beat manner.

They are variously collected from interesting writers and other clever people who have made me stop and think. Sometimes they’re a bit darker than the usual inspirational fluff that gets posted everywhere. Good. This is a work in progress, and I’ll be adding to them on an ongoing basis so feel free to check back if you need something for that presentation, lesson or assembly.

Albert Camus

“An intellectual is someone whose mind watches itself.”

“The absurd is the essential concept and the first truth.”

“I know of only one duty, and that is to love.”

Johnny Cash

“They’re powerful, those songs. At times they’ve been my only way back, the only door out of the dark, bad places the black dog calls home.”

“I went out walking through the streets paved with gold, lifted some stones, saw the skin and bones, of a city without a soul.”

“There’s no more simple life with simple choices for the young.”

“And I was blinded so that I might see, the Man in White.”

“I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down. Livin’ in the hopeless, hungry side of town. I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime, but is there because he’s a victim of the times”

Bede Griffiths

“Atheism and agnosticism signify the rejection of certain images and concepts of God or of truth, which are historically conditioned and therefore inadequate. Atheism is a challenge to religion to purifiy its images and concepts and come nearer to the truth of divine mystery.”

“Anything we can say about God or the Infinite is limited, is symbolic, is a kind of analogy. It points to something that cannot be expressed and every religion points towards this inexpressible mystery.”

“Behind all the differences of religion which are infinite in the scale of multiplicity we find a common tradition a common wisdom which we all share and that’s the hope of the future – religions will discover their own depth. As long as they remain on their surface they will always be divided in conflict.”

“The word of God, the divine light is present in every human being.”

Jack Kerouac

“God was gone; it was the silence of his departure. It was a rainy night. It was the myth of the rainy night.”

“I like too many things and get all confused and hung-up running from one falling star to another till I drop. This is the night, what it does to you. I had nothing to offer anybody except my own confusion”

“The whole universe was crazy and cock-eyed and extremely strange.”
